Building of ancient origins in the hills of Maremma, in the dense forests of oak, holm oak, chestnut and beech, a few kilometers from Massa Marittima which has been renovated in respect of architecture and traditional materials.
Relaxation and wellness in the woods
This is how La Melosa, that in the eleventh century was a Benedictine church dedicated to San Cassiano, then the domain of Aldobrandi family mentioned by Dante in Purgatory. Today is a charming small resort with spa and restaurant, just outside Roccastrada run by Gemma Solari and her husband Gabriele Rum, son of art as his family also owns the Hotel Castello Monticello on the island of Giglio.
Opened in 2004, the structure with terracotta floors and stone walls, has twelve rooms, each one unique, overlooking the lush garden with rose and lavender bushes, fruit trees, large oaks and tall cypress trees, and the large and inviting swimming pool.
For rooms it has played on the use of color and each one is personalized with trompe-l’oeil murals that make the fairy-tale atmosphere: we were allocated the Blueberry room with bedspreads and curtains lilac and cute squirrels paintings on the walls. Along with Melosa, is a room with private garden suitable for those traveling with hairy in tow, but also with easy access for the disabled and both are more rooms that can be occupied by smokers. Because here attention to the guest and his needs is constant and you feel constantly pampered by Mrs. Gemma and Alessandra who welcome at reception and are always ready to answer any queries or provide advice on what to do, see and experience in this area.
Another distinguishing feature of the rooms is the ceiling with wooden beams treated with natural waxes, while the climate control is achieved by a modern cooling system and underfloor heating with adjustable dehumidification system in every single room. All devices that have earned at La Melosa Resort on Ecoworld HOTEL certificate awarded to hotels and B&B environmentally friendly.
On the ground floor there is the large living room where traditional elements are there: the ceilings with wooden beams and convivial fireplace complete with comfortable seating and small tables for breakfast, which in summer is served on the terrace outdoor pool.
The pampering continues in the warm and welcoming Wellness Centre, designer Deckelmann, where relaxation path begins with sauna, turkish bath and showers energizing, and continue on the heated bench or in the two whirlpools. But the top is reached in the cabins for massage with the wonderful benefits effects on the skin have their natural line of cosmetics “MelOil” made exclusively for La Melosa Resort with olive oil of the Maremma, medicinal herbs, vitamins and plant extracts.
Many proposed treatments, including massages with seashells and “Chocolate Hugs”, also available in the “Pampering for two”, those reserved to couples who want to take advantage of the stay in the green of the Maremma to relax and seek together the well-being body-mind.
The romantic parenthesis can continue to Il Canto del Gusto, the hotel restaurant that is open every evening also to the outside where the chef Cristina offers a daily changing menu with traditional dishes prepared with Maremma local and seasonal produce. We, recommended by the gentle and smiling Elena in the room, we chose the selection of meats Subissati of Roccastrada with fett’unta, pici cacio e pepe, the wild boar and tagliata by Scottona of Maremma with rosemary. Before dessert, a delicious panna cotta with chocolate and mint, was surprised to be observed through the large window overlooking the woods by a little curious fox, quiet, has entered, he looked at us and then continued his walk. This unexpected encounter reminded us what a stay here will make you feel completely immersed in nature.
Concerning the wines we preferred to drink local giving our preference to two Maremma DOC: Montecucco and Monteregio red wines that are well matched with robust dishes of local gastronomy.
And then? Relaxation and good sleep in our comfortable room overlooking the green lawn on the back of the resort: here Arturo would be so much fun! Ms. Gemma also waited him and for that she had reserved to us he room without stairs and with private garden. Surely in La Melosa Arturo would have allocated all his five bones.
