To experience the peace of the woods on the quiet shore of a lake and spend time in log cabins with waterside veranda was always one of our biggest wish. We thought to realize it going to places like Finland, where to go to the cottage, mökki in Finnish, is one of the most popular customs of the country, or in Canada, where the chalet at the lakes is a widespread housing solution.
The Ecoresort for those who love four legged
Instead we are to meet it had not to go away, but we reached Castel Volturno, two hours from Rome and halfway between Caserta and Naples, where the Plana Resort, a village within Mediterranean EcoParco. Here an area of 100 hectares has been transformed into a private nature reserve after an environmental recovery plan: the lakes on which overlook the 44 lodge rooms and 14 lodge are former sand quarries now bathing, surrounded by dense vegetation and populated by various species freshwater fish and wading birds.
Plana Resort is the ideal structure for those looking for a place dedicated to the physical and mental wellbeing, sport and sustainable tourism. But there’s more: the natural park is bordered by the reserve of Lake Falciano, the WWF oasis of Monte Massico and the oasis of Variconi, walking destinations on foot or by bicycle, but also on horseback.
To protect the environment, in the Relais runs only on foot, by bike, by electric car or by boat, considering that all facilities can be reached by boat. Guests have a riding school, a beauty farm for massages in total relaxation and the large pool.
In the Relax Club of Plana Resort, Tiziana, Vittoria, Fabiana and Gabriella guarantee complete “regeneration” driving in a route that includes various types of massages, including relaxing, de-contracting and draining, whirlpool baths in aboveground, infrared sauna and Finnish, Stone therapy and Fish therapy, also called the Smile therapy, as the exfoliating action is performed with the movements of the mouth sucker, which are like little kisses, of the Garra rufa, small fish freshwater cleaners toothless originating in Turkey, also known as Doctor Fish for their healing capacity. This therapy has very intrigued us, but we have not got to experience it first hand: we will do the near future to test the soothing and healing action of the enzyme dithranol, that Garra rufa secretes during its activity and in contact with the skin, making it soft and velvety.
If you think that everything is just a few kilometers from infamous area known as the land of fires, which causes even more wonder and approval: the Mediterranean EcoParco of the and the Plana Resort represent a kind of environmental redemption and especially the proof that the environment and tourism can co-exist in a new way. And that tourists can become part of this new development model, which seeks to have the least impact on environmental resources as possible.
Who runs it, the architect Vito Luigi Pellegrino, in addition to the business model characterized by environmental responsibility, also has at heart the extreme care based on exclusive cuisine of local products. In the restaurant you can have lunch or dinner à la carte booking and choosing among the specials. A choice that enhances the food and cuisine of the area starting by the excellent pizza both the classic version as Margherita with delicious local buffalo mozzarella, and in those less traditional, or cheese plateau, buffalo mozzarella and ricotta, Provolone del Monaco and Pecorino di Laticauda, who never fail in the menu.
At lunch we kept light with the proposals that the chef puts among the starters: octopus and Taburno potato millefeuille served with lemon mayonnaise and fried anchovies in a pistachio crust on a salad of fennel and oranges. For dinner we enjoyed pasta and potato pie with fondue cheese and crispy bacon and traditional bell beans and escarole soup with croutons. Over all we drank a fresh and acidulous “Vite Maritata Asprinio di Aversa DOC”, Asprinio 100%, produced by a centuries-old indigenous variety grown between Caserta and Naples by I Borboni firm (Via E. De Nicola, Lusciano (CE) -Tel. +39 081-8141386 – email@example.com).
But the triumph is breakfast: organic honey bee, croissants of all kinds, cakes and pies, jams and preserves (must-try that with annurca apple), boiled eggs, tomatoes, cheese and many other sweet and savory delicacies.
Our advice is to bask on the terrace suspended over the lake just before sunset to enjoy the spectacle of the sun hiding behind the tall trees on the banks dipped in pure gold, surrounded by a surreal silence, broken only by the quacking of ducks and coots. Our lodge had a magnificent view of the lake and the fireplace, strictly electricity. And, returned for the night, from the windowed wall facing the bed we were lucky enough to see the lake now dark in the dark of night, lit only by the huge full moon.
When we heard for the first time at the Plana Resort and Foof, the first museum in Italy entirely dedicated to the dog (https://www.cittameridiane.it/en/foof-the-first-museum-of-the-dog/), both derived from an idea by architect Pellegrino, we immediately thought of ideal holiday for those of us traveling with hairy in tow. In fact, besides the rooms “standard” hotel provides the so-called foof, especially designed for our 4-legged friends who, along with their owners, can enjoy maximum comfort, the terrace with fenced area to the private beach dogs. In addition our furry friends can bathe in the lake, have access to the pool area, at reception, to train for transportation, to the restaurant area.
Pity we did not have time to come here with our Arturo! He would become the darling of all the friendly and professional team of staff. And he would be so much fun to walk with us along the banks of the lake in a warm climate almost unexpected spring in December and focus the ducks in the morning, along with pair of white swans, that came to greet us and to take advantage of the pieces of bread that stored for them.
We hope to return soon to Plana Resort, perhaps with a sleeping pad that will take a place in our heart next to that given forever to Arturo and maybe to test the new design by Gino, as here he is affectionately called by all: the houses floating, movable from one to the other side of the lake and equipped with all the amenities!
