Put one evening for dinner in a garden and near a lit fireplace, just for two. The place is unique, the ancient mill of the Locanda Rosa Rosae, as well as the experience: the two guests, in this case we, take the aperitif, and then enjoy the outdoor dinner accompanied by house wine.
A fairy tale mill in the Treviso area
In this place that enchants from the name, which expresses musicality and poetry, we spent two nights together with our Otto, welcomed upon our arrival by a welcome made of sparkling wine, homemade semifreddo and candied ginger.
And then around to browse, between the vineyard and the ancient walls that still retain all the charm of the past, with the blades still working immersed in the Meolo stream that runs along the mill and, inside, the gears in sight.
We are in the Treviso countryside in the municipality of Breda di Piave: here the old mill dating back to 1570, which worked until the seventies and turned into an inn ten years ago, welcomes its guests with large vases full of fragrant flowers, baskets full of fruit and the flickering lights of candles, scattered everywhere, in a warm and familiar atmosphere.
The impression you get is to be in heaven and the temptation is to never leave again. In this place suspended in time and immersed in a beauty with an authentic flavor, Silvio has restructured the mill, limiting as much as possible the architectural interventions and using as much as possible traditional local materials: stone walls, ceilings with exposed wooden beams and floors in rough bricks.
Each of the four rooms reserved for guests is characterized by colors and atmospheres that make it unique. All furnished with care and refined refinement, they tell the story of the place through the fabrics in raw linen and the shades in neutral tones that give a vaguely Provencal taste.
The owners, Silvio and Elisabetta, had initially thought of this old mill as the ideal refuge for their weekends. Then, however, they ended up falling in love and came to live here in the attic.
To furnish it they visited and looted flea markets in Italy and abroad and collected furniture and furnishings in their travels, in a rather casual way, without looking. Here everything gives the impression of being placed there by chance, but everything is designed to create a unique atmosphere that envelops the entrance, a kind of greenhouse full of fruits, plants and flowers.
The walls of stone and brick dress the patina of time that is enhanced by the contrast with the airy drops of blown glass that, one different from the other, hang from the ceiling of wooden beams on the old tables, the odd chairs, the books, trouvailles from bric-à-brac.
Even objects of daily use have been used to give character to the environment: little pots with aromatic herbs, glass jars, pots hanging on the walls. The unique Eames chairs and the giant Octopus chandelier, designed by the landlord, architect and designer Silvio Stefani, are the only contrasting notes. As Elisabetta tells us over the weekend, he turns into a SilviOste and serves at the table and entertains guests on Friday and Saturday for dinner and Sunday for lunch and dinner are waiting for tables set with vases of flowers and herbs as a centerpiece and as decorations scattered on the table fruit and vegetables.
Fixed the menu decided from time to time based on seasonal products. It starts with appetizers to be served to the overflowing buffet: 60 proposals from cod alla vicentina, octopus salad and cuttlefish, grilled vegetables, flans with herbs, cuttlefish with squid ink and polenta.
And then whole tables dedicated to cheese and olives of at least a dozen different qualities. Once seated at the table to taste these delicacies, cook and landlady arrive with trays filled with fragrant and tasty fried vegetables… and how to say no!
There seems to be no more room for the starters two that follow, a velvety of local asparagus and a roll of fragrant field herbs. But you must also taste the second, a stew with an intense flavor.
To drink, Raboso del Piave or sparkling wine of the area.
For desserts back inside, where lit by candles, a rich and greedy buffet is provided: pies, puddings, parfaits, homemade ice cream, chocolates, truffles and so much fresh fruit.
Not only is it all good but has the taste of things done well, at home, with the aromas of once in the morning find themselves in the delicious breakfast served in the hall of the large fireplace under the pergola overlooking the river where the wheel of the mill.
The structure, the old mill with the adjacent barchessa, is surrounded by a garden, with rose bushes that climb along the stone walls. The interiors make this inn resemble the trunk that rises on the shore of the Meolo in front of the shovel immersed in the water. Like that trunk is rough, material, lived, from irregular surfaces.
But the place would have only half its charm without the landscape that surrounds it. First of all the garden, which houses a vineyard, fruit trees and a short stream of water, the irrigation canal that fed the mill. And, around, meadows and countryside far from the mass tourism routes.
