This article begins with a warning: attention, the spell of the trulli of Acquarossa is powerful and nobody wants to go away anymore!
It happened to us, that we reluctantly left this magical place, a village of trulli resting on a small hill that dominates the surrounding landscape between the districts of Panza and Casalini in the countryside of Cisternino, in Valle d’Itria.
An enchanted village of trulli
But above all it happened to Marilena, who years ago fell so much in love with this enchanted village, with the bulging cones of the trulli pointing towards the sky, the little doors from which you expect gnomes and fairies to come out, the chimneys and the narrow paved passages between one house and another, to make it her home by opening it to others with generosity.
In the management of the complex of trulli, formed by more than 20 cones restored and 3 to be restored, transformed in 1998 into a bed and breakfast, she is assisted by her son Luca and his wife Erika, while she continues to shuttle her city of origin, Brindisi, dividing her time between the hearings and legal advice of her first profession, that of lawyer.
In twenty years, slowly, the small delightful village on the road to Casalini has been restored with care and attention to detail. Inside the trulli they have maintained a peasant charm, a bit rough but frank, with custom-made furniture in dark wood, softened by hand-painted decorations, crochet curtains and doilies, linen embroidered sheets.
Here you are completely away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and to confirm this there is also the choice not to include TVs in small homes.
Instead, there is the swimming pool, added in 2008: large and inviting, it becomes an irresistible attraction in the afternoon light, when it is nice to dive and swim while the sun colors the surrounding countryside golden. And then stop for a chat under the cool patio that welcomes guests in the morning for breakfast among the scents of flowers.
Without haste, which is banned here, finding a slow rhythm punctuated by nature all around inviting relaxing walks along silent lanes among olive trees and Mediterranean scrub, to do on foot or by bicycle. Then return to the white tips of the Trulli of Acquarossa, one of those places that remained in splendid isolation, despite the short distance from the town.
The 8 apartments, all built from trulli, are independent of each other and the solutions for the stay are varied: from the “intimate” trullo suitable for two people, to the union of several units for large families.
All have a bathroom, a fridge and free wi-fi, and most also have a wood-burning fireplace, like our Trullo Rosa, large and at the same time cozy, formed by two cones in a single open-space and an outdoor area with deckchairs and an iron sofa overlooking the wide courtyard of the hague, where you can spend pleasant moments of absolute relaxation.
Also ideal for couples are the White, Green and Gray trulli, which like everyone take their names from the tones used for the furniture, while for those who stay with children the perfect solutions are the Yellow and Jasmine with a single bed in addition to double, Erica with a double bed and two single beds, and the Lavanda trullo for the most numerous families, with a double sofa bed, double bed, bunk bed for 2 people and 2 bathrooms.
Before leaving we wanted to go around the hamlet again, where a pleasant silence catapults us into a world where time seems to have stopped. We climbed the trulli, bypassing the cones of chiancarelle, grayed by time, to embrace the confines of the small fairy-tale village and the green of the surroundings as far as the eye can see.
And at that precise moment we thought that Marilena is right when, heartfelt and moved, she tells us that it doesn’t just happen in fairy tales to come across haunted places …
