Very often the rooms tell. And they also have much to say! Beginning with the name chosen to connote them. L’Angolo del Poeta, charming B&B in the center of Matera (https://www.cittameridiane.it/en/from-matera-to-montescaglioso/), begins to “talk” to the guests, revealing his position. It is located at the corner of Calata Ridola, the downhill road along Palazzo Lanfranchi. And from a window set in the high and severe wall of the building is said overlooked the poet, Giovanni Pascoli, fixing his eyes on this little house, during his two years teaching at the Royal Grammar School “E. Duni” of Matera, from 1882 to 1884.
But not all guests can in turn complete the story, adding that a bit ‘ of years later, in 1899, Pascoli was appointed Commissioner exam at the Royal High School of Conversano and here he met a local literay man, professor and poet, my great-grandfather Leonardo De Mola. And my family still keeps the letters of correspondence between the two there was after the meeting.
So we began our stay in the cozy rooms of L’Angolo del Poeta. With these few words with Anna and Enzo, the friendly owners who welcomed us at this facility that is under a year (it is coeval of our travel blog because it was born in April of 2015) and was inaugurated as the first guest of the US Naomi Shohan, production designer of Ben Hur remake with Morgan Freeman, who was shot in Matera, which is due out in July this year.
Inside you feel immediately at home, thanks to the all white environment but “soiled” by a bit of gray that reflects the light making it soft. The furnishings chosen in shades ivory, custard, cream and pearl, are doing their part in the large living room with kitchen and in the two bedrooms, one on the ground floor overlooking the Sassi area and the other on the first floor accessible with a spiral staircase with a lovely terrace from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city. Both are independent and offer the comfort and privacy to the guests: each room has a double bed with possibility of extra bed, a modern bathroom with large shower, TV, wi-fi, air conditioning and heating, and the windows, which look great eyes wide open of the Sassi.
An added bonus is definitely the B&B location: a few meters from one of the most beautiful squares of the city, the one entitled to Pascoli overlooking the Sasso Caveoso, but in a quiet and peaceful place in the heart of the Sassi. Really the ideal solution for those visiting Matera or travelers like us who choose location where spend the night not only for its strategic position and for the convenience, but mostly because they want to move, to return home, a reminder of a place where were good, a place of the heart to which back with nostalgia and the desire to return to feel the same emotions. Which, we are sure, he shared with us Arturo who has enjoyed the wide spaces choosing his corner, but also of the many Anna caresses that, at home, has four dogs!
