We are in Pisciotta, renowned for the production of olive oil from olive tree named pisciottano, tall, majestic and perched on the sides of these steep hills overlooking the sea. Here Sonja Damato wanted to renovate a mill with its imposing presence keeps the past alive. Starting from the ancient millstone of an old olive press, real sculpture that hangs between the rooms and the breakfast room. The name of the B&B ‘A Machina la locanda del fiume is meant as a tribute to the original intended use of the large building, an old mill that once stood on the road leading to the village of Pisciotta on the banks of a stream.
But it is not only the presence of the millstone to witness the history of the place. Even the furniture, piece by piece chosen personally by Sonja, is taken care of in the sense of respect for the past in a proper balance between classic and rustic. In all six rooms and five mini apartments, the floors are made of olive wood floors, furniture in cherry wood and rosewood, and the ancient massive in chestnut beams.
Large and multi-level is the outdoor space with shaded terrace by a pergola with tables set in the morning for breakfast with homemade jams of pears, peaches, cherries, figs, walnuts, apples and plums and delicious cakes with almonds and nuts, with a view of the picturesque village of Pisciotta opposite. At the lowest level, almost drowned in the sea of olive trees surrounding the property, the large and inviting swimming pool with sun beds and umbrellas on tap to the guests.
For those in pleasant idleness among olive trees and swimming pool prefers action, Sonja is always ready to advise and make suggestions on how to spend their days between tours to local jewels such as the Archaeological Park of Elea – Velia and boat trips among the wonderful coves of Camerota and Palinuro. Indeed ‘A Machina is also the ideal starting point for nature walks and visits to towns rich in art and history as Pisciotta, within walking distance from the center and historical gem that offers scenic views of medieval flavor.
And, after walking between sea and land, is very pleasant stay in one of the large rooms with all the amenities of this mill restored with style and attention to detail, a perfect setting for a romantic getaway for two even with third hairy inconvenience!
