Duparc Contemporary Suites, art hotel in Turin

When you arrive in Turin and enter the DUPARC Contemporary Suites for the first time, in the eclectic San Salvario neighborhood just steps from the greenery of Valentino Park, you’re greeted by a surprisingly minimalist atmosphere, “where space becomes light,” as you can read in the description of the property published on the hotel website.

And indeed, it is: both in the suites and common areas, light is the undisputed protagonist of its iconic modernist architecture, along with the collection of modern and contemporary art. Designed by architect Laura Petrazzini and contemporary artist Corrado Levi, DUPARC Contemporary Suites is truly one of a kind. Behind the concrete and glass façade of the 1971 building, an icon of Italian Brutalism, lies luminous apartments and Junior Suites with spacious spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows, a Bistro, a Bar, and an Oriental SPA, also open to external guests.

Already in the lobby, the gray concrete is brightened by the blue of the seats and the carvings on the columns and ceiling, as well as by the explosion of color in the artworks, both contemporary and by the leading exponents of Arte Povera. The art hotel’s exhibition continues in the suites, conceived not as a museum or gallery, but as an integral part of the environment.

This is how architect Petrazzini and artist Levi conceived the DUPARC Contemporary Suites. They asked their friends, leading figures in Italian and international contemporary art from the 1960s and 1970s, to create works for the hotel that would harmonize with the spaces and architecture. In the suites, these works interact with the headboards created by Turin-based artist Elisa Sighicelli, who served as artistic director of architect Valter Canuto‘s recent renovation project, which focused on renovating the existing apartments.

Since the 1970s, the collection has grown steadily and is constantly evolving, traveling around the world to museums and temporary exhibitions. Speaking of which, on June 6th and 7th, DUPARC will participate in Open House Torino, the event that transforms the city into a multi-purpose museum of architecture and design, opening its doors to the curious and all art lovers. It’s part of a major international event involving more than 40 cities worldwide.

Wandering among the works of artists such as Mimmo Rotella, Le Corbusier, Richard Woods, Mario Schifano, and Michelangelo Pistoletto, as well as iconic 1970s design pieces by Vitra and Kartell, the Tolomeo and Nesso lamps by Artemide (my favorites, which I also have at home), and the Parentesi lamps by Flos, designed by Achille Castiglioni and Piero Manzù, captivated me and made me feel like a child in a room full of toys.

So, let’s get to the point. The welcome was special: in the Superior Deluxe Suite, a true apartment where we spent our stay, with a spacious and bright living area with a dining table and two sofas that convert into single beds. It’s equipped with every comfort, from a fully equipped kitchen to two bathrooms. Delicious chocolates awaited us, along with a dog bed and a bone-shaped bag holder for our Otto. Special thanks to the kindness of the staff, always attentive and available to satisfy every request and always ready to pamper Otto.

It’s hard to leave our suite, with its large windows and panoramic views of the hills, to explore Turin. But in the morning, it becomes easier when we think about breakfast and head to the bright breakfast room, set with a sumptuous sweet and savory buffet, where our four-legged friends are also welcome.

The only area off-limits to dogs is the Oriental SPA, an oasis of well-being that Michele and I enjoyed in complete solitude. The hour-long session is divided between a water area and a relaxation area, with tropical showers at different temperatures, a neck waterfall, a eucalyptus steam bath, and a jacuzzi.

In the relaxation area, we enjoyed the chaise longues and a herbal tea. To ensure maximum serenity, guest access is limited to a maximum of six people at a time and is guaranteed by reservation during the opening days and hours of the DUPARC Oriental SPA, Tuesday through Sunday, 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. Unfortunately, time didn’t allow us to try the massages and treatments available to hotel guests and external guests, from Ayurvedic to an energizing and illuminating detox facial to a Balinese Ritual inspired by Lulur, the purifying ceremony used by princesses in preparation for their wedding. One thing is certain: we had such a wonderful time at DUPARC Contemporary Suites that we’ll definitely be back, along with Otto!

In addition to the SPA, the hotel also features a 24-hour gym, paid parking with electric charging stations, and bicycles for exploring the city. The San Salvario neighborhood offers a wealth of dining options, and the city center is just a short stroll away. For those traveling with dogs, the proximity to Valentino Park is convenient, with two fenced-in areas where our four-legged friends can run free and socialize. A perfect option for enjoying Turin to the fullest!
