Have you ever slept in the vineyard? No, not in a vineyard-view room, but right between the rows of vines from which is drawn that delicious nectar which is called Nero di Troia.
In Bovino at Rocco Zambri Bed&Wine
Well we have experienced the double emotion of sleeping cradled by a wonderful silence and wake up between the chirps of the birds that jump among the vine shoots at Rocco Zambri Bed and Wine in the countryside of Bovino in the Monti Dauni.
Here in an old farmhouse surrounded by vineyards dominated by the postcard profile of the reliefs of Subappenino Dauno, Rocco Zambri, for his friends Antonio, that is his second name, has realized his dream but also that of those who want to sleep in the countryside , even in the vineyards, creating a small Bed and Wine.
Only two rooms, a triple and a double room with a minimalist design, in this rustic dwelling in the middle of the vines and a stone’s throw from the enchanting castle of Bovino, whose thick and imposing walls can be seen at the top.
The accommodation is a gem for wine and countryside lovers. But the real heart of the company is achieved in what were once the stables. Here Antonio proudly shows us the machinery for the winemaking process and its labels telling us how his passion for wine has distant origins.
“My memories in the vineyard start when I was a teenager and I started to get interested in the various jobs that took place in the field” – he tells us. Then we continue the conversation outdoors as the sun begins to descend between the tops of the hills and dyes the warm spring evening with golden dust.
In fact, among the courtesies for the guests, there is a space where you can contemplate the sunset on the green sea around dedicated to tastings led by Antonio himself, expert “personal trainer of the wine”, which ensures real wine experience with the tastings of his wines.
Wines, from white based on Greco to rosé Vienrose made from Troia grapes up to the full-bodied red Pozzo del Campo vinified from grapes of Troia in purity, which are produced from grapes harvested in the vineyards around the farmhouse and in another estate not far away.
“Going forward over the years, the interest in oenology and the fascination that this world has always had on me, led me to deepen this subject scientifically and I embarked on the university course at the Faculty of Agriculture of Foggia. Then I wanted to improve with a Master’s degree and I did various work experience first in collaboration with the university, then on my own. Immediately afterwards I decided to start my company and give vent to my passion trying to put into practice scientific experience and knowledge that up to that moment I had acquired. The company gradually took shape and in 2006 the first production of bottled wine with my brand”.
There is so much passion together with so much pride in the words of Antonio while he tells and describes the characteristics of his wines and looks around, caressing with his eyes the tender virgults of his vineyard. The sun greets us.
To “dispose” nothing better than a nice walk in the vineyard, also appreciated by Otto who is the only one to have remained sober.
The Bed and Wine Rocco Zambri is the perfect place to combine wine tastings and visits to the small jewel villages included among the Monti Dauni. Just a few minutes drive, in fact, to reach the magnificent Lucera, the small Ascoli Satriano that houses the marble masterpiece of the Griffins and Troia with its amazing cathedral.
In the morning we expect a beautiful sun and a rich breakfast with homemade cakes from Antonio’s mother. And after a healing sleep, very fresh, we understand better the meaning of the words of Salvador Dali that the winemaker of Monti Dauni, as he likes to define himself, wanted to use as caption of the photos of his estate: “True connoisseurs do not drink wine: they taste secrets”.
